Keep your laptop clean

It’s important to keep your laptop clean, inside and out. Dust, dirt, and grime can build up over time and cause problems with your laptop’s components and performance. Here are some tips for cleaning your laptop:

  • Start by unplugging your laptop from any power source and disassembling it, if possible. Remove the battery, hard drive, memory modules, and any other removable parts.
  • Dust the inside of your laptop with a can of compressed air or a soft-bristled brush. Be careful not to damage any sensitive components.
  • Clean the exterior of your laptop with a mild soap or cleanser. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasives, as these can damage the finish on your laptop.
  • Once everything is clean, reassemble your laptop and plug it back in.

Protect your laptop from physical damage

Laptops are expensive devices, and as such, you’ll want to do everything you can to protect your investment. Here are some tips on how to protect your laptop from physical damage:

  • Use a protective case or sleeve. This will help to keep your laptop safe from scratches, dings, and other types of damage.
  • Avoid using your laptop in dusty or dirty environments. If you must use it in such conditions, be sure to clean it often to prevent build-up of grime and dirt which can damage the internals of your laptop.
  • Don’t store your laptop in extreme temperatures. Both heat and cold can damage your laptop, so it’s best to keep it in moderate conditions if possible.
  • Be careful when handling your laptop. Dropping it, even from a short height, can cause serious damage. Always hold it securely when transporting it and be careful not to jar it around too much.
  • Keep food and drink away from your laptop. Spills can ruin the electronics inside and make your laptop unusable. If you must eat or drink while using your laptop, be extra careful not to spill anything on it.

Keep your laptop cool

Laptops are designed to dissipate heat, but if yours is getting too hot, to help keep it cool, there are a few things you can do. Make sure the vents are not blocked and that the fan is running. You can also try setting the laptop on a cooling pad or using a stand that raises it up so air can circulate better. If you’re still having trouble, you may need to take it in for service.

Update your operating system and software regularly

To make sure your operating system and software are up to date are one of the most important things you can do to keep your laptop running smoothly. Operating system updates usually include security patches that can help protect your computer from malware and other threats. Likewise, updating your software can fix bugs and improve performance.

You can typically set both your operating system and software to update automatically. For Windows, head to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. For macOS, open the App Store and click Updates in the toolbar. For most third-party applications, you’ll find update options in the Help or Preferences menu.

If you don’t want to wait for automatic updates, you can also check for updates manually. Again, for Windows head to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Check for Updates. On a Mac, open the App Store and click the Updates tab at the top of the window. Many applications will also have a Check for Updates option in their Help or Preferences menus.
